Denise Roobol is a vegan bag designer from Rotterdam. In 2013, she started her own label: DENISE ROOBOL.

When did you first know that this was your calling?

During my studies at the Willem de Kooning art academy, I was always busy making bags at the ateliers. After my graduation, I found a gap in the market, there simply were no vegan bag labels in this style. So with my background in design, because of the art academy, I started my own label.

How did you get your business off the ground?

With hard work! And I quickly tried to build a network.

Make a simple and good plan, use your network and be distinctive.

What makes your company unique?

Everything is 100% vegan, minimalistic and has a timeless design. I only use the highest quality vegan material: microfibre made of pressed fibers, making it super strong and water-repellent (which is ideal for the Netherlands!). 😉

What is the biggest challenge for you as an entrepreneur?

I find it the most difficult to keep a good work-life balance.

What inspires you to continue?

I would like to inspire everyone and show how cool & fashionable vegan leather can be.

What is your life motto / what mantra do you live?

Everything is possible!

How do you ensure a good work-life balance?

I try to do that by scheduling workouts around 17.00 – 18.00, afterwards I am relaxed and my head is empty.

How has the Corona virus affected your work?

It made the team more creative, we came up with concepts that we wouldn’t have come up with otherwise and those did really well! One of the concepts we started are FaceTime shopping sessions.

What can people do to support you and others in your field?

Not sure what to answer to this. Everyone on social media asked to buy gift vouchers, but now everything is opening up again: go support your locals!

What are your plans for the future?

In addition to the sales points in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Austria and Australia, we want to expand to boutiques across all continents. And we would like to add a vegan shoe and clothing line as well!

Do you have tips for people who want to start a business (in this field)?

Make a simple and good plan, use your network and be distinctive.
